Thank you so much for this lesson Allisha! I am more and more aware of caring for the earth that our wonderful Heavenly Father has blessed us with. It inspires me to share the world and teach my great grandchildren about the God who has created them. They are such an amazing blessing to us!

We all hope and pray to “take” others with us on this journey into heaven. I have so many to take and at times I am overwhelmed just thinking about it! I hope and pray that God helps me to do my part – then trust in him for the rest.

God bless you and Myles as your journey on in your service to God. It is wonderful that you enjoy so many things together. You are a great blessing to one-another in that journey.

God’s richest blessings on you both.

This morning in my devotional the scripture for this week is Psalm 149:4. For the Lord takes delight in his people, he crowns the humble with victory. So since God Delights in ‘me’ I should too! Listen to Him.

Wonderful message Liz! Inspirational prayer Whitney! I love thinking about creation and the variance of it – the purpose (mosquitos?), the beauty – think of the Zebra – so different from the horse in appearance, yet so much alike in form! I find God’s creation so entertaining and when we dwell on it it moves us to absolute awe! What an awesome God! The one true, all powerful, all knowing God – that is whom we serve! And even when we have questions – where else would we go – there is no other like him! Praise his holy matchless name!!

I really enjoyed reading your devotional. My favourite section was
“It is clear in this six-day sequence that, “The progress of God’s creative activity was upward toward man.” In fact, the special thrust of this entire creation narrative is pointed squarely at the emergence of man upon earth as the crowning act of all creation!”
I was also thought you ‘hit the nail on the head’ so to speak in your life application and when you spoke about that fact that we get distracted by our own human questions. The focus like you said should be on God’s and His story and what this story communicates to us about God. Thanks for sharing such a great read, so challenge.

Thank you, Arsena and Josie, for the very thoughtful meditation and prayer about the creation of the first animal life in the water and air, based on what the Lord tells us in Genesis. I was thinking about how beautiful that time must have been! And while we often think of the amazing fish and other creatures of the sea and the beautiful birds that fill the earth, I’m so glad you also reminded us of the complexity of all the almost unseen creatures–the minute organisms that other water creatures depend on–and the vast variety of flying insects that fill the air and provide food and pollination. The intelligence that designed this complexity–it’s overwhelming when you really think about it–how things fit together and every part of creation, no matter how tiny, has a positive purpose. In Genesis we see how carefully God has planned his creation, and how beautifully and lovingly He designed everything. When Job questioned God’s workings in his life–“Why have you treated me unfairly?” (as Job was trying to understand why God was allowing him to suffer so greatly)–God never answered his question, but reminded Job of his creative and sustaining power. Job realized that as a human, God’s workings, “are too wonderful for me to know.” (Job 42:3). And for me, every time I look at the details of the natural world, I realize that I will never be able to understand really “how” God made it, but that God alone in all the universe has the power to do this and did it with love. And wow, that’s enough for me!

And thank you, Bea, for the beautiful hymns that remind us of God’s creation. I love the singing feature of this weekly devotional.

Thank you again to everyone who is involved in putting this together for us–the technical work as well as the planning and content creation, and to the small group leaders who carry the thoughts on through the week.

Thank you Eva. Our computer has been especially busy this week and my time for use has been minimal. I am finally able to thank you for this lesson – it is encouraging – especially in our circumstances right now. Something I have always remembered about light is how far reaching it can be. During war there were blackouts – lights were out so that the enemy could not “see” where to drop bombs! Growing up in the country, I was always nervous about walking the family lane (about 350 yards) with no light. Dad always teased us and said, “don’t worry – if anybody grabbed you they would let you go as soon as they got you to the yard light!!” Joking aside, we never know how far our Christian light shines. And, what’s more – we do not need to – it shines for God and to his glory not ours. God bless you all. Have a great weekend and a wonderful Sonday!

Thank you Selena and Bea. It’s so nice to break down the verses like this. As Selena mentioned this section might be easily missed unless we take time to ponder deeper. With Selena referring to the vegetation as the first living organism, I was taken back to my biology classes in the University and remember being in awe of how plants reproduce via seed in one form or another. Plants of all forms have such diversity and intricacy. It’s just fascinating.
I also appreciate that someone above mentioned that God made the ground for us to work and cultivate and knew that that would be part of humans major livelihood. And thus he refers to these terms (harvest, seed, weeds , etc) so much throughout Scripture and makes things relative. God wants us to know and understand his word.

Thank you, Eva, for your wise words reminding us that not only has God created physical light, but He has given us his spiritual light to reflect to the people around us. ”
This other verse came to mind–light wins over darkness.
“The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.” John 1:5, NLT.
What is darkness?–It’s the absence of light. Light isn’t the absence of darkness, even physically–it was created by God, even as he has made his people to be the spiritual light in this sinful world.
    “For you were once darkness,
but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” Ephesians 5:8

Thank you, Mel, for the beautiful hymns that remind us of God’s hand in creation.

Thank you Selena for your spiritual thoughts on God showing His thoughtfulness, His order for the universe, and His love for us. He foreknew people would have to work the ground for a living and so through the creation of plants and seed he, through Christ, was able to use the familiar terms such as seed, harvest, good trees and bad trees, weeds, to bring to people the message of salvation. We truly serve a God mighty in power and loving who lavishes blessings freely on us.

Thank you so much Selina! Thank you so much Bea! Don’t we serve a wonderful amazing God! He always has a plan and that plan is always perfect! Yes, Josie – I agree! He always knows what we need even before we need it and as my mother often said, “He is never late”! I, too, am amazed at “the order of things”. As Selina says, God spoke his creation into existence in the order it was needed – the preparation of the land that was needed to reproduce all that we would need to survive and re-produce ourselves as he commanded. There is order in all creation and order in God’s plan of salvation. We need to hear the Word in order for the seed to be planted in our hearts and minds so that we can then acknowledge God and our need for salvation. Then, once the seed is planted, we obey – we repent, we are baptized (planted/die to sin) and we are raised – we become a new person with a new identity in Christ – to grow – to be the person he wants us to be! Praise his holy name! What a plan! What a wonderful God we serve! God bless and have a great week!!

    HI Serlina,
Thanks so much for sharing this. The part that stood out to me the most was when you said, “but this step in creation is the first instance that God creates something that is able to reproduce. God creates something that, in today’s terminology, we would call a living organism, life.” I never thought about this passage in this way before. It reminded me that God is a God of order, everything in creating was calculated. He did not make man first and then realized that he should have made food for man to eat. Everything was calculated and executed in a specific order. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thank you, Selena, for reminding us of the beauty and love in God’s creation of vegetation. I’ve been walking on some trails by the river a lot this winter and even in the winter, there is such variety and beauty in the dried grasses, bushes, and trees. And as you reminded us, vegetation is the first living thing (designed to reproduce) that God created.

I was reminded of how Paul uses the example of a seed to help us understand the possibility of our resurrection in Christ. In 1 Corinthians 15:35-41, he answers the Corinthians believers’ questions about how the resurrection will work by saying that a seed must first “die” in the ground before it can become alive in a different form, to show that a person must first die before he or she can be resurrected to new life. We don’t understand exactly how that works, but because we have faith in that process, we sow seeds, knowing that God will send something different (a live plant) from that bare, brown “lifeless” seed. Paul says we should have that same faith in the resurrection of our bodies to a new and better life.

So when I read your devotional thoughts, Selena, it made me wonder if the Holy Spirit through Paul’s words was taking our minds back to this Genesis account of God creating vegetation, including seeds, to help us see that from the beginning, God also had a beautiful and loving plan for us.

I have spent a lot of my time reflecting on how God uses our life experiences to lead us to him. I grew up beside a lake – and water has always touched me in different ways. I guess that is why my thoughts went where they did with this devotional. With the death of my father recently, my memories carry me back to my childhood and what that lake of water meant to me and how many of my memories are connected to it. Wow! Thank you Stacey for these thoughts today. I can honestly say I have never put so much thought into these passages. All I have ever thought about when I have read these verses in Genesis before, is simply, that God created water to cover the land, and then tweaked it a little bit. But I don’t think I’ve ever put any thought into how much God used water throughout scripture to show his awesome powers as you have shared. And I honestly don’t think I have ever thought about the idea that he uses water also to save us. I know that seems like such an obvious thing that should go through my head, but in reading these Genesis verses, I just don’t think I ever looked beyond the creation aspect of it. You have tied in some really great scripture references and I personally really appreciated where this devotional took my heart today, so thank you for that.

I grew up around water (Lake Ebb & Flow – isn’t that a beautiful poetic name!) We could see the lake from our house (about 125 – 150 yards east of the house) and when I married and left home at 17 years of age, I missed that Lake as much as I missed my parents and my siblings – and that was a lot! Whenever we drive past the farm – even after 52 years – no matter what the season – I have to roll down my window of the vehicle, stick my right hand and arm out the window to “see and smell and feel” the lake.

Though “they don’t speak with sound or words their message goes out to all the earth and their words to all the world”. Psalm 8 is another great reference to the awe of creation.

Lia, thank you so much for sharing your insight with us here. So well put together.

Blessings to all my wonderful sisters!

I am so excited that our study has begun! The verses that were referenced in our first lesson are wonderful. Thank you Lia. They are such a good reminder of God‘s hand at work from the very beginning and how He is in ultimate control. It is very true that the first verse can leave one with many questions but the scripture you referenced brings peace in reminding us that we can have faith that He is I n command and thus we do not need to understand all the details. Thank you so much for this note. And thank you Bea for your singing, I have missed collective worship so much and to hear you sing brought joy to my heart.

It was a gift for me to be asked to take time to reflect on this passage, and I’m happy this devo has been encouraging. I’m so thankful for each of you and this study series, because I know there is so much strength that comes in connecting with others who share this faith in our Creator.

Thanks for the beautiful songs, Bea. As much as I miss not being able to sing and worship together collectively, there’s something really beautiful about hearing such a talented person sing a solo!

Wonderful thoughts to start us off, Lia! I think you captured it so well when you said that God in his wisdom, “revealed just what we needed – no more, no less. . . . Our God is powerful and He is in control. That’s how it always was, and how it will always be.” When I look at the majesty, intricacy, and beauty of creation, I can only worship . . . I know that any understanding I gain will be good, but all I really need to know is that a loving God has this world in his hands. If he can make and sustain this universe, surely he can take care of my daily needs and concerns.
Thank you, Bea, for the hymns that connected so well with Lia’s thoughts.
Thank you everyone who is working on this and contributing their thoughts and comments. I know God’s Spirit is going to strengthen our faith individually and collectively as sisters in a family through these twelve weeks.

Thank you Lia for the inspiring message. Your message led me to meditate on the fact that the Triune God carefully planned creation. The verse tells us clearly that God and the Holy Spirit were present and John 1:1-3 clearly states that Jesus was also present and participated in creation. It surely demonstrates that the Godhead is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, and just how loving He is since he wants us to seek Him and have a relationship with Him.
Bea, I too found myself singing along in worship to a great God! Thanks!

So thrilled with the verses you have chosen to indicate that so much more is involved than just this smattering of information given for us to set our faith upon! It is so important that our deep appreciation of the wonderful Creation God has provided for us leads us to the so much more important aspect of His love and plan for us to spend Eternity with Him!
Bea, I so enjoyed your songs! I trust I can keep them where I can replay them easily!

I can relate to the not feeling like singing part, but I still sing. Years ago when I was going through a very hard time, I was crying a lot and just felt so miserable. My mom said, “You know my dear, we are supposed to give thanks and praise in everything, even hard times. It’s a command. God tells us to do it.” I replied, “I don’t feel like singing” and she responded, “Well, He didn’t say you had to feel like it.” I still smile when I remember that. God bless. ❤

We have lived in a really “self-empowered” time for the last few decades and it’s easy to forget that our real strength comes from God. I know you have many, many things on your plate and appreciate your honesty in talking about how you have to shift your focus back to God when things get overwhelming. We all need to remember that and hopefully this hymn (and the others you suggested), along with your reflection, will encourage us to choose to look to God for strength and peace.

I completely surrender my life to you afresh.. let your light shine through me and reach everyone around me.. let my life lead people to you. This is my desire.

I think we can get so mired down in our daily struggles that it’s hard to see the big picture – or even be able to hope that there might be a bigger picture. So when confronted with struggle after struggle, it’s hard to be joyful. It’s easier to just feel exhausted and sad. We need to look up, fix our eyes on Jesus – but it can be hard.
